Probably the best cut on Rvssian riddim, Kartel is back this time with J Capri. We are really feeling Rvssian riddims at the moment. He is probably the only one that is actually making stuff that will last longer than 2 weeks. On this riddim he gets all the big dogs Sean Paul, Konshens and Kartel. Sean Paul sounds better than he has in a long long time, Konshens is good but is still missing something since his burst a year or so ago. Any new Vybz Kartel is always welcome and on this one he rides the reggaeton influenced track better than the others.

As 2013 comes to a close, it’s time for our Top 20 tunes of the year. This year more than others we feel that there is a growing scene with various radio shows, labels and DJ’s playing more and more of the music we love. There has been a lot more attention payed towards Africa, Soca finally getting more shine and Dancehall moving more and more into the mainstream. There may have not been a big crossover song but instead there has been many a song which has caught the imagination of the public. We have certainly seen a shift in our raves where people are demanding we play stuff that a few years ago they would have looked a bit lost at. Let’s hope that this momentum continues with more and more exposure to the World Carnival sound. This list has been based on the tunes that we have been playing out at our numerous raves, listening to at HDD Headquarters and generally being the best ones out this year.

So the man has been in prison for a long time and all of a sudden we get this? When this came out it was a bit odd but after watching Jamaican Tv show Onstage it all became clearer. This single is coming on on Vybz Kartel’s wife’s label which is focused on clean and positive songs. The only other people signed to the label are his kids. We are struggling to think of any other song that is so school positive. This is the first of the many great cuts on the Toasted Riddim to get it’s own video.
Look it’s quiet for riddims (RIP Roach the don who was half of the team that made the last great riddim Overproof Riddim). There are small bits and pieces out there but nothing that will make you consider that running 5 or 6 songs in a row just because it’s that great. Toasted Riddim by TJ Records could be the one. Let’s talk about the riddim which has echoes of early nineties riddims which it’s simple marching band drum structure. Then the cuts Aidonia channeling Little Lenny, Vybz Kartel being amazing (some of the new stuff hasn’t stuck this wiil), and plenty other artists. Oh wait thats right RDX doing Pum Pum Medley (including I see you smile interpolation), Konshens and Mad Cobra all make appearances.
Action Bronson goes reggae with this remix from the Soul Force cats. Bronson’s non sequiturs make him a difficult person to remix but he sounds great on this classic reggae riddim. This is taken from their latest mixtape which you can listen to here. Above we have put the video of Bronson on Vybz Kartel’s Money from last year.
