As 2011 is coming to a close we decided to do the near- impossible task of picking our top 20 tunes of the year. Based on the tunes we have been playing out and the tunes we have been listening to at HDD Headquarters, in no particular order, here are our top hip hop, dancehall and tropical tunes of 2011.
In his recent NY Times interview Hip Hop’s current vogue producer Lex Luger mentions that he wishes to branch out from his signature sound to work with artists. We have heard this from other hit producers and it just hasn’t happened, usually most drive “their sound” (sometimes not their own fault) into the ground. Meanwhile this 20 year old producer has already branched out and created an entirely different sounding hit.
This Wale single (originally off the MMG Self Made compilation, not on Wale sophmore Lp Ambition) sees Luger sample Curtis Mayfield’s glossy soul and craft what i imagine what Frank Sinatra would rap over if he wanted to. Whether it’s his “trap” sound or this Luger sure does know when to keep things minimal when need be.
Continuing with UK Mc’s on american beats week here is Lady Leshurr. On her new mixtape Friggin L she hops on a variety of the best hip hop beats around. I really like the tape, especially her twitter version of Touch a button. The video above is her spitting on top of BMF, to be honest i’m not the biggest fan of people on this beat especially a year after the fact. Her mixtape is worth checking out though.
Last night Tuggawar came through the #StyleandSwagger show (Monthly dancehall show hosted by HDD residents The Large, Why Delila and Kazabon) and tore up the place. He didn’t have a lot of time but wow he’s got energy for days. You can expect that podcast soon.
One of the songs he performed is from his new song Buss my Gun where Tuggawar goes over the Lil Wayne and Rick Ross beat for John.
