Earlier this month HDD DJ’s Kazabon & Hootie Who were guests on the excellent fortnightly Pollinate and Steak House show on Hivemind Fm. The show has had the who’s who of Tropical music grace it’s decks and we were honoured to join them. We did a live hour and 20 min mix featuring what we are calling Winter Carnival faves. In other words sounds from Brazil, Ghana (Azonto), Nigeria (Naija Pop), Soca (Trinidad and other islands), Funky, Tropical, Funky Bashment, Garage and even some R and B classics. You can check out their facebook page for more and look out for the next edition of the World Carnival series.

It’s been a big week or so for HDD resident Murlo, his first Ep Nectah was released on Pollinate (You can still support him). He went on the Wifey radio show on Deja Vu FM with juke god Chrissy Murderbot (he also gets in some speed meringue) on Thursday. Then came up to Manchester on Friday with us for Can You Felix‘s crazy KMT party at the Roadhouse (which no one knew was a Patrick Swazye film). He rounded the week off by playing at our 2nd birthday and sending the crowd in a frenzy. What would this week be without some recorded evidence, So above is a video of him playing his Bax Down refix (Mosca’s all conquering Bax and Walter Ego’s Calm Down) in Manchester (with added jumping around from us) and below is the Wifey show from Thursday.
Two weeks time (Decmeber 3rd) we celebrate 2 years of Hipsters Dont Dance with our monthly at the CAMP. It’s been amazing and we have thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. The sessions at the camp have become legendary with soca mosh pits, amazing live performances and incredibly dj sets becoming the norm. What better way to celebrate than with just having our family involved, so it’s all residents. You can check out the event here.
You should also check out Large Up (the fantastic Caribbean influenced sector of the Okayplayer conglomerate) as we and Jillionaire Dancehall Jamboree mixes made their excellent mixtape monday column. Props to DJ Theory.
Time Out’s clubbing editor Kate Hutchinson compiled a list of London’s best tropical nights and HDD were included.
We are really proud to be listed alongside such nights as Get Low, Bruk Out, Pollinate and Giles Peterson presents Havana Cultura. In fact Pollinate (under their record label guise) are putting out HDD resident Murlo‘s new EP later this month.
You can read about them, us and more on the Time Out blog.
Murlo was on Just Jam 2 weeks ago and here is his set. I can’t really say much more apart from the fact its the usual high quality soca grime funky bashment (his preferred description of his work: 4 genre minimum) all together in a wicked 20 minute mix. Allow the space age visuals.
Just in time for our October Session, new resident Murlo did a mix featuring not only his usual dancehall and soca styling but also his favourite african bits as well. So you have Kes the Band alongside Shisha Boy or Aidonia alongside our poster star Terry G as well as his Mr Vegas remix. Don’t forget that on October the 1st you can some African spice at HDD at the Camp. It’s Nigerian independence day so we will be adding a hint of Victoria Island nightlife in the Old Street venue. We will be bringing the best in hip hop, dancehall and tropical on the night as well.
