HDD’s Top 20 Tunes of 2013

HDD-TOP20_2013_2

As 2013 comes to a close, it’s time for our Top 20 tunes of the year. This year more than others we feel that there is a growing scene with various radio shows, labels and DJ’s playing more and more of the music we love. There has been a lot more attention payed towards Africa, Soca finally getting more shine and Dancehall moving more and more into the mainstream. There may have not been a big crossover song but instead there has been many a song which has caught the imagination of the public. We have certainly seen a shift in our raves where people are demanding we play stuff that a few years ago they would have looked a bit lost at. Let’s hope that this momentum continues with more and more exposure to the World Carnival sound. This list has been based on the tunes that we have been playing out at our numerous raves, listening to at HDD Headquarters and generally being the best ones out this year.

Douster x Inna Style N Fashion

ISNF-Cover-Art-500

You may know Douster from his popular King of Africa or his Dagga remix of Busy Signal’s Da Style Deh but like a lot of the producers we love, he has a love and appreciation for dancehall which is clear in his latest EP on Mixpak Inna Style n Fashion. Not only does the release have the best Artwork we have seen in a while  it has everything you need for your summer soundtrack.

Wine is one of our favourites on the EP due to that demanding intro followed by Cee Gee willing you to ‘make love to the concrete‘ and Douster’s clever sampling – phone interference never sounded so good!

Like Gyptian’s Hold Yuh and Mavado’s Never Believe You, Wine Like a Genie has piano keys that make you fall in love with it. Dancehall tunes built on piano keys are winners in our book and Like A Genie can now be added to this category. You will be singing this one all summer.

Kantana reminds us a little of Gappy Ranks on Dollar Sign, his vocal over the rolling guitar riff and dancehall stabs make it dancefloor-ready and Keida adds the feminine touch to the EP on Never Lose. Listen to the EP below or buy it from Juno, iTunes or Boomkat
