First of all Phyno’s videos are the best out at the moment. What yo end up losing by him speaking in his native tongue is more than made up with his visuals. The other thing thats important for him is that very instrumental i’ve heard him on is part hip hop part racing dance music, creating an interesting soundscape that is his own. I spent most of this morning going through artists that are trying to sound like 2013 50 cent. Even 50 Cent doesn’t want to sound like 2013 50 Cent, it’s quite depressing. I guess another thing i like about Phyno, he looks like a naija version of Taz Arnold. Differentiating yourself is going to be pivotal as the outside world starts looking at these artists.

The guys are back with videos for Hiroshima and Baby Steps from last year’s Boom mix tape.
We all love DJ Mustard right but often we forget that it wasn’t him that crafted the amazing Function. That goes to League of Stars, another west coast production group with some great stuff. Another one of those hits is the Jump Around sampling single by Eric Bellinger. The fluidity of west coast artists continue with Problem popping up for rap vocal duties.
Our February session was one of our best yet at The Shacklewell Arms, so for those of you who missed it, and for those of you who want to re-live it here are some excellent shots by Egle Trezzi above, and a recording of Kazabon & Hootie Who’s set below. HDD head honchos and party starters Kazabon & Hootie Who ran through everything from dancehall to soca to afro pop to tropical bass, in true world carnival style.
Remember Hipsters Don’t Dance is the 1st Saturday of every month at The Shacklewell Arms.
One of the standouts of Dom’s latest lp Get Home Safely gets the visuals it deserves. The west coast revival is coming and this is something that truly captures the vibe coming out from a lot of these artists. Whilst New York bickers with itself, the west key players all flit in and around each others projects .TeeFlii even brings his “Annie” fictional character to this song. The video itself is similar to a lot of Dom’s recent ones, party vibe everyone having fun and not much more. It really does let the music speak for itself which is smart. My hope for the coming year is that Paranoid blows up, Left Right blows up, Up Down blows up and this leads to a new Teeflii x Dj Mustard song blowing up. Followed by Eric Bellinger then a Sade x DJ Mustard track.
