HDD TOP20_2012

As 2012 comes into its last few days we decided to  repeat last year’s near- impossible task of picking our top 20 tunes of the year. Someone over at Jhene Aiko’s fan site put up an unofficial mixtape with 15 of her most recent tracks. Collabs with the majority of TDE (Ab-soul, Schoolboy Q), Danny Brown, Casey Veggies as well as Big Sean and Frank Ocean. It’s a must listen in advance of her debut lp next year.

#HDD Hangover 8 : Kazabon

We at HDD have a phrase for those suffering after a night out at Hipsters Dont Dance it’s called a hdd hangover. As a thank you to our amazing crowd we have decided to create a mix series to ease you back into the real world. The 8th mix in the seriesis by HDD resident Kazabon. It’s better than Alkaseltzer!
Here are a few words from her:

When I’m hungover I need something soothing to listen to, so for this hangover mix I chose tracks from singers with smooth soothing voices – Miguel, Pharrell, Jhene Aiko, Jesse Ware and Sade.

Frank Ocean x Pyramids

Frank Ocean Pyramids hipsters dont dance

Ok so it’s been out for a few days but this site isn’t about firsts, its about quality music. And this ten minute sprawling epic jam which is effectively two songs tied together thematically is that. Referencing Cleopatra, Strippers, Pimps, Adam and Eve and a bunch of other references that leave you wondering if this is purely historical or really and ode to strippers and their lives. The first “song” shows Frank with a funkier vibe than he has been on, other r and b cats better watch out. The second one take a sizzurp inspired downtempo shift into this song about Cleopatra. Be warned 100 producer will sample the chorus and make it into some boring minimal techno nonesense. Stripping away the fantastic wordplay that goes with the filtered buzzsaw and spectral keys instrumental.
Even the simpsons looking artwork is great, especially hammering home the feelings in the song.

Frank Ocean x Thinking About you (Future The Prince Remix)

If you are not following rapper Chase N Cashe on twitter you are missing out on some gems. Not only is he incredibly honest about what is going on in music but he will often point you towards some great music out there. Yesterday was no exception, he pointed his followers in the direction of Future the Prince, who is Drake’s DJ , soundcloud. On it is this alluring remix of Frank Ocean’s Thinking About You. The remix itslef flirts on the line of big room dance music alongside a subtler more introspective vibe. Personally i prefer when the instrumental calms down to fit the vocal but the big room part doesn’t put me off. It’s a fun mixture of both approaches that leaves you as a listener wanting more.

Frank Ocean – Swim Good (Emynd Bounce Remix)

We are big fans of Frank Ocean over here at HDD towers. And although Tyler the Creator is currently getting the plaudits, Frank’s mixtape is easily the best piece of work from the Odd Future camp. Either way, it’s nice to hear good music from these young artists. Im posting the Emynd remix because he adds a bit of a bounce flavour to kick the song into another gear.
