HDD’s Top 20 Tunes of 2013
As 2013 comes to a close, it’s time for our Top 20 tunes of the year. This year more than others we feel that there is a growing scene with various radio shows, labels and DJ’s playing more and more of the music we love. There has been a lot more attention payed towards Africa, Soca finally getting more shine and Dancehall moving more and more into the mainstream. There may have not been a big crossover song but instead there has been many a song which has caught the imagination of the public. We have certainly seen a shift in our raves where people are demanding we play stuff that a few years ago they would have looked a bit lost at. Let’s hope that this momentum continues with more and more exposure to the World Carnival sound. This list has been based on the tunes that we have been playing out at our numerous raves, listening to at HDD Headquarters and generally being the best ones out this year.

Popcaan x Everything Nice
We should have posted this when it first came out but we didn’t. Instead we were chatting with fellow members of the scene about how good this is, how it’s an album setting single differentiating Popcaan’s recent work and the Mixpak work. In doing all that it made it hard to actually write about the song in a coherent way. So instead here are some bullet points.
Dubbel Dutch’s production is fantastic on this, Murlo mentioned how weighty it sounds in the club.
In his (Dubbel Dutch’s) interview on the Mixpak radio he mentions the fact that Popcaan has a great talent to find melodies. Although that ‘s always been right in front of us you don’t realise the fact that in a lot of Popcaan songs he has 3 things going on at the same time. It’s the difference between a song being forgettable and a song being good (see Unruly Rave).
Popcaan’s Ice Cube impersonation
Popcaan’s lyrical ability, especially his ability to relate to his audience. There is a lyric in unruly rave where he says to are having too fun fun you wont pick up your phone. In Everything Nice – Music a play till the speaker fuck up is one of the many non sequiturs that will stick in your head. It’s already become something you quote when you have a friend off to NY (maybe not that specific but when was the last time you thought you can quote a dancehall lyric to express that sort of emotion).
The single is out now, go and support it. If you wanted a club banger, I’m sure there will be at least one on the LP. The beauty with this is that Popcaan doesn’t flood the market and that means the cream will always rise to the top.
