Viking and Harbinger Bunji Garlin has once again teamed up with HDD favourites Jus Now to bring us another carnival banger. One of our favourite things to do at Notting Hill Carnival is to follow the trucks, and any truck with Bunji on it would definitely be the one to follow if you are at Trini Carnival this year. Bunji and Jus Now have one big bad stink carnival anthem on their hands with this one.

We could take or leave a Busta verse on anything at this moment. It seems that it goes 1) ask Nicki (she rarely does remixes anymore as she is massive), then 2) ask Busta Rhymes when it comes to songs from the Caribbean that need a US artist to break into the US. We wish that they would think a little outside the box and maybe get someone suited for the song rather than someone who will get automatic blog hits (the standard bearers of Hip Hop blogs are usually in their early 40’s/late 30’s hence the continual posting of anything from their golden age). The original version which leaked (remix, not the OG song) was garbage, this newer version is better. Let’s hope it pushes the song further along, Bunji deserves it.
As 2013 comes to a close, it’s time for our Top 20 tunes of the year. This year more than others we feel that there is a growing scene with various radio shows, labels and DJ’s playing more and more of the music we love. There has been a lot more attention payed towards Africa, Soca finally getting more shine and Dancehall moving more and more into the mainstream. There may have not been a big crossover song but instead there has been many a song which has caught the imagination of the public. We have certainly seen a shift in our raves where people are demanding we play stuff that a few years ago they would have looked a bit lost at. Let’s hope that this momentum continues with more and more exposure to the World Carnival sound. This list has been based on the tunes that we have been playing out at our numerous raves, listening to at HDD Headquarters and generally being the best ones out this year.

The past two years we asked some of our favourite djs, producers, artists and bloggers to recommend their favourite Notting Hill Carnival soundsystems, food stalls and anthems, and started to compile the HDD Guide to Notting Hill Carnival. Here are our (Kazabon & Hootie Who) recommendations for 2103
Toddla T at SSP Soundsystem
Toddla T has curated one hell of a line up for his takeover of SSP sound system on carnival Monday. Special guests Fuse Odg and Bunji Garlin were added this week and will be joining HDD favourites Serocee, Jus Now, Atumpan, Stylo G, Lady Stush and more between 12pm and 7pm Monday 26th at the corner of Alderson Street and Kensal Road. More details here.
HDD World Carnival Party
If you have been following our World Carnival mix series you know how we like to party and this year we are throwing our second World Carnival party, this time at The Old Blue Last. This year we will be joined by Swing Ting’s Samrai and Palm City Social’s Moroka alongside HDD residents The Large and Illanja. More details here.
Pump it up by di trucks
Following the trucks is one way to make sure you hear all of your favourite soca hits at carnival. A lot of people tend to overlook this part of carnival which is a shame because you really should experience it. HDD favourites Trini Gladiata (who also has a birthday party at Birthdays on Sunday) and Schlachthofbronx will be on the floats all weekend. Try and catch the Abir float as it will be serving free drinks all day, Schlachthofbronx will be at the Urgent Union Float on Monday.
Tucked away in the massive celebration of carribbean music is Nigerian Corner. Basically the biggest Nigerian street party in the UK. Wande Coal, JJC and D’banj have all performed before. It is only on the Monday at Adela Street.
Carnival 2013 Anthems
Every year has it’s anthems and this year we think Whine and Kotch and Atenna will be running things. We also included our dark horse picks for Carnival Anthem 2013, Jus Now – Tun Up and Mavado – March Out.
So Good! This is everything i wanted and more, the song for the summer gets the video it deserves. Will this catch on? I hope so, we here at HDD are READY FOR DI ROAD!
If there’s one thing we love and appreciate here at HDD it’s when different sounds come together to create something truly unique; Sam Interface and Laza Beam have definitely achieved this with their latest project under the name Jus Now. For this project Sam Interface (from Bristol) and Laza Beam (from Trinidad) have been fusing their favourite sounds from T&T and the UK and have been working with the likes of Bunji Garlin and MX Prime for their upcoming One Time EP. The One Time video was shot on location in Port Of Spain Trinidad, and like their music is a clever composition of island life and the mysterious.
Trust us Jus Now are going to be ruling the fetes from here to Trinidad this soca season, they are even behind one of our favourite soca riddims of 2013 Marimba Riddim, and Bunji Garlin’s Savage. You can hear more from Jus Now on their soundcloud.
