Do you remember when you had to wait for MTV’s The Lick or Yo MTV Raps to see the best new videos? We do! Kazabon even had a VHS of the her favourite videos, from a time when Hype Williams was behind nearly every great video and when artists tried to out-do themselves and their peers with the hottest new video. We have decided to dig into the HDD video vault to bring you some of our favourites.
This week’s Video Vault selection is a summer one since we are digging out our favourite summer anthems for Sweat It Out this Saturday at Catch. We discovered this early Buju Banton tune a little while ago and we just love Buju’s moves especially his bogle. From his excellent yellow sports suit and his incredibly dance moves to the great variety of dancers and the subtitles. This video has it all.
The video for Beyonce’s Party remix just dropped and we love it at HDD Headquarters. The over-riding feel of the video is that it’s believable, it reminds us of this video of B at a block party.
Here are some other reasons why we love it:
Beyonce cooking up a storm in a teeny tiny trailer in teeny tiny shorts Solange’s Bogle Beyonce teaching the party how to Dougie The Yellowman look-a-like That Keith Haring dress It’s nice to see a football shirt in an American hip hop video (shame it’s a Chelsea one) Beyonce and Kelly taking time out from being the biggest females in the games to have some fun
The only thing that could make this video better is if Andre 3000 was on the verse. Props to J Cole for his Slick Rick references though.
Konshens may have released the video of the year, part music video part documentary on dancers in dancehall. We are currently cooking something up that required us to go back and look at old dancehall videos. Effectively the ones that we remembered were the one’s with dancers and as Konshens said where would dancehall be without dancers?
Once a month Why Delila, The Large and I (Kazabon) grab some roti and red stripe and head over to Reel Rebels Radio to bring you an hour and a half of bashment, funky bashment, soca and everything in between. Here is our second Style and Swagger show (you can check out the first one here) featuring ‘One to Watch’ section on Max Glazer of Federation Sound, our Bogle tribute and the ‘Soca Selection’
