Kazabon & Hootie Who’s Top 5 x Notting Hill Carnival 2013

44624_10150250676580176_3821123_n

The past two years we asked some of our favourite djs, producers, artists and bloggers to recommend their favourite Notting Hill Carnival soundsystems, food stalls and anthems, and started to compile the HDD Guide to Notting Hill Carnival. Here are our (Kazabon & Hootie Who) recommendations for 2103

Toddla T at SSP Soundsystem

Toddla T has curated one hell of a line up for his takeover of SSP sound system on carnival Monday. Special guests Fuse Odg and Bunji Garlin were added this week and will be joining HDD favourites Serocee, Jus Now, Atumpan, Stylo G, Lady Stush and more between 12pm and 7pm Monday 26th at the corner of Alderson Street and Kensal Road.  More details here.

HDD World Carnival Party

If you have been following our World Carnival mix series you know how we like to party and this year we are throwing our second World Carnival party, this time at The Old Blue Last. This year we will be joined by Swing Ting’s Samrai and Palm City Social’s Moroka alongside HDD residents The Large and Illanja. More details here.

Pump it up by di trucks

Following the trucks is one way to make sure you hear all of your favourite soca hits at carnival. A lot of people tend to overlook this part of carnival which is a shame because you really should experience it. HDD favourites Trini Gladiata (who also has a birthday party at Birthdays on Sunday) and Schlachthofbronx will be on the floats all weekend. Try and catch the Abir float as it will be serving free drinks all day, Schlachthofbronx will be at the Urgent Union Float on Monday.

Nigerian Corner

Tucked away in the massive celebration of carribbean music is Nigerian Corner. Basically the biggest Nigerian street party in the UK. Wande Coal, JJC and D’banj have all performed before. It is only on the Monday at Adela Street.

 Carnival 2013 Anthems

Every year has it’s anthems and this year we think Whine and Kotch and Atenna will be running things. We also included our dark horse picks for Carnival Anthem 2013, Jus Now – Tun Up and Mavado – March Out.

Toddla T Sound at Notting Hill Carnival

Toddla T sound Notting Hill Carnival As big fans of Toddla T’s productions and selections, when we heard he was programming a sound system at Notting Hill Carnival this year we knew the line up would not dissapoint! We caught up with Toddla to ask him a few questions about his plans for carnival.

Why did you want to run a sound system at carnival?

I’ve been in love with Notting Hill Carnival since I first came in 2006, I’m always blaggin gigs but when I was given the chance to programme a day by Mad Fingaz of SSP sound it was like being asked to book the pyramid stage at Glasto for me hahaha

How did you come up with your line up?

I wanted to keep it friends and family and not go too bizerk, keep it Toddla T ya know. Everyone on the line up is a good friend, collaborator or someone I’ve battered on radio but I also wanted to represent the wide range of carnival sounds, to have Robbo and Breach on the same line up is pretty special I think but makes perfect sense to my ears at carnival, it has a sonic conection. Neezy The Driver aint particularly known but is one of the best DJs I know .. Him and D Double are gonna be a problem! Plus some super exciting secret guests and I’m gassed to see Atumpan perform one of the biggest carnival tracks ‘The Thing‘ , plus my Toddla T Sound.. Shola Ama, Serocee and DRS…… I’m just gettin loadsa dubs done for the occasion!

What’s your favourite carnival song?

Probably Shy Fx – Original Nutter, it’s always mad, especially when he plays it on his Digital Soundboy stage every year.

Toddla and the full line up will be holding it down at SSP sound system on the corner of Alderson Street and Kensal Road on Monday 26th from 12pm to 7pm.

Atumpan x The Thing Video Re-up

If you are a regular reader of the blog or a regular at our parties you will know that we have been riding with this Atumpan tune for a while now – it even featured in the second mix in our World Carnival series. This summer the tune is being released on Ministry of Sound and with it comes a lyric change (which we are not sure was neccessary) and a new video with visuals from Ferry Gouw . Watch out for new remixes too including a big one from Serocee and Famous Eno.

Atumpan x The Thing (Serocee & Famous Eno Remix)

This song has been a long process and we are glad to see it finally come out. Serocee is one of our favourites full stop. A great MC not only in the studio but live (rare in this day an age), a great DJ (who could easily just rely on his dancehall heritage but instead has a thirst for tunes unparalleled by many) and an all round good guy (Check out his Mek Money Monday mixes for a great combo of all three).Famous Eno is that guy. He is the Robbie Keane of the game: vastly under rated, versatile and is incredible. The two of them combine to take Atumpan’s afro pop hit and turned it into bashment influenced banger.

World Carnival #2

Hipsters Dont Dance World Carnival #2 Mix

7 months after our first World Carnival mix we are back with the sequel. This mix spans not only our musical influences but represents the sound of our heritage. The music that this generation of diasporas (Trinidad and Nigeria in particular) are making. So we have music from countries as diverse as Ghana, Trinidad, UK, France, Nigeria, Portugal and Germany amongst others. For us combing genres such as Soca, Azonto, House and Tropical Bass is natural and something that we have nurtured through our club night. We wanted to replicate the sounds we know are orignating from carnivals in Port of Spain, Calabar and London. We hope that you enjoy this mix, this is what we believe is our World Carnival.
