Strictly Riddims No 16 Mixed by Bacchanal Ronin

strictly riddims4

With this series we hope to increase appreciation for dancehall riddims and instrumentals as we feel that in dancehall the productions and producers don’t often get the props they deserve.

Once again we reach out to Manchester and Bacchanal Ronin provides us with a mix that darts around dancehall, soca and SA house. Sit back listen and bust a skank.

Spanning the full Oh Bacchanal! spectrum; bashment, R&B, hip hop, soca, afropop, afro house and tarraxinha; the point of the mix is how much fun it is to weld all these styles together. Overall, the mix feels tactile with an emphasis on melody. I favoured riddims with novel sounds and samples that make them seem complete and charaterful without a voice… although, feel free to add your own vocals if the urge takes you.

Our Strictly Riddims mix series focuses on instrumentals. With this series we hope to increase appreciation for dancehall riddims and instrumentals as we feel that in dancehall the productions and producers don’t often get the props they deserve.

We return back to the mix’s dancehall roots with Manchester based Joey B. As part of both the Hot Milk and Swing Ting crews he is quite familiar around these parts (he is a badman dj). Here is what Joey had to say about his mix.

In terms of how I put the mix together, its a one take mix, where I just drew for some of my favourite Bashment riddims from over the years, new and old, in no particular order. Most of these are played from Jamaican release 45s, with some CD juggling too. I wanted to give some shine to the riddims that have stood the test of time for me, and also to the new ones that I’m feeling right now. Was well good fun doing the mix, and great to bring the producers and labels to the fore.

Inspired by dancehall riddims and the recent work of two of our favourite producers Murlo (Quartz EP) and Dubbel Dutch (Self Help Riddim), we have decided to launch the HDD Strictly Riddims mix series focusing on our favourite instrumentals. With this series we hope to increase appreciation for dancehall riddims and instrumentals as we feel that in dancehall the productions and producers don’t often get the props they deserve.

Then the mix series went away for a while. We are happy to announce it’s back and we got 2 exciting producers from our cultural partner Enchufada‘s label. Bison and Squareffekt have crafted a mix full of tracks that “evoke a cinematic space journey that launches out of Africa and connects to the West.” You should also check out their work on the recent We Call it Zouk Bass II compilation which is also out on Enchufada on Monday.

We couldn’t think of a better combo to bring back the mix series and take it into exciting new directions.

The 13th mix in the series is by Samrai from Manchester crew Swing Ting. If you don’t know about Samrai, you should! Not only a great DJ (make sure you see him when you can) but a great producer as well. His mix focuses on well i’ll let him describe it:
“Going for a 12″ version excursions selection ft. 80s computer / digital dancehall into 90s with a few 00s pieces to finish off as I thought they hadn’t been covered as much by the series.”
You can check out all the 12″s here.
