HDD & Friends : Favourite Notting Hill Carnival Soundsystems

HDD carnival soundsystems

Over the years we have asked some of our favourite djs, producers and carnival goers to share their Notting Hill Carnival tips with us. Here are some tips from HDD friends and family on the best sound systems to visit (now updated for 2018). Check Time Out London’s soundsystem map to help you find your way.  Plus this year the official organisers of Notting Hill Carnival have an app and loads of useful info on their website.

A minute’s silence will be help at 3pm on Sunday 26th and Monday 27th to honour the victims of the Grenfell fire.

Hipsters Don’t Dance
Nasty Love on Colville Gardens, Volcano on All  Saints Road, GT Flex/Mayhem Crew on Middle Row/Conlan St, Nigerian Corner on Adela Street (this one is on carnival Monday only),  Toddla T and SSP Sound system on Alderson Street are some of our carnival favourites, but this year look out for Hoodcelebrityy, Alicai Harley, Maleek Berry and loads more at the RBMA stage at Emslie Horniman’s Pleasance Park on Sunday and for the soca fans Mangrove will be running road with Iwer George, Patrice Roberts, Voice and more.

HDD & Friends: Best Food to eat at Notting Hill Carnival

Notting-Hill-Carnival-Food

Over the years we have asked some of our favourite djs, producers and carnival goers to share their Notting Hill Carnival tips with us. Here are some tips on food and drink at carnival (now updated for 2018).

Hipsters Don’t Dance
Call your local caribean takeaway and ask them if they have a spot at carnival, if not see if they can recommend a stall, there’s nothing worse than overpriced bad jerk chicken! If you can find a roti spot that does doubles that’s a winner (plus great for vegetarians)! Our favourite carnival drink is Appleton Estate with ginger beer and a squeeze of lime, avoid Red Stripe if you don’t want to spend the day waiting in toilet lines.

Dan Bean
I have one secret that will revive you in dark times. On Portobello road there is a place called the Grain Shop, they board it up during Carnival to look shut but if you push the door …it’s open. Never any queues and you get a big fuck off tray filled full of food that will keep you going. I’ve been going to carnival for 24 years now and still don’t trust the Jerk Chicken. Bring your own booze too, a lukewarm can of Red Stripe for a fiver taste like piss and takes the piss, go for Rum, alternatively for a classic carnival look buy a bottle of Alize.

Gabriel Heatwave
I don’t have a favourite stall but in terms of drink it’s all about a plastic water bottle full of rum…

HDD Carnival Essentials

This week we and our carnival experts have told you where to go, what to  eat and what to listen out for. We haven’t told you what to bring, below are our carnival essentials. Ten things you need to maximise your carnival experience.

1. Carnival is all about repping your counrty and pumpin yuh flag

2. It can get hot out there so a spare t-shirt is always helpful

3. A whistle is a definite carnival essential

4. Bitter lemon or any other mixer (Ting, Ginger Beer or Coke)

5. Party Machel Montano style with a bottle of rum (preferably Appleton Estate)

6.  Styrofoam Cup is this year’s cup to be seen with

7.  Straws are pretty useful for mixing your rum and chaser.

8. Towel is dual purpose, excellent for waving round your head like a helicopter to power soca or for when times get hot and sweaty

9. Hand sanitiser for times when the port-a-loos have no soap left

10. This list would not be complete without an airhorn, hand pumped or gas airhorns are perfect for showing your appreciation for carnival anthems.

HDD’s Best RBMA Major Lazer Carnival Moments

Over the past 3 years the RBMA and Major Lazer Carnival party has become one of the musical highlights of the year. From it’s small and inauspicious beginnings to last year’s guestlist spots being snapped up in 10 seconds, the party has moved from strength to strength. Some people might only be going for the free booze and food (nothing wrong with that) but the carnival line up has always boasted the best DJ’s and producers around. The event for us has been an opportunity to see some of our favourite dj’s up close. On the eve of the guestlist being open (11th august 10 am) here are some of our favourite moments from the last 3 parties.
