Last year’s Bacchanalist and Mr Fete profess their love of soca with a little help from South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Machel and Kerwin took a trip to South Africa to shoot the video and it looks like they enjoyed every minute of it – watch out for Machel’s bungee jump! Like soca, this tune has the power to posses.
This slipped by us, and many others at the tail end of last year but i have been playing the riddim randomly this month. This is the best cut on the riddim (on another one there is a horrible line “You body look good not aidsy”) and sees Potential Kid using those voices in the same manner that made us like him so much in the first place. The whole second verse about buying hair for his Mrs is pretty funny as well. Looking forward to hearing more from him in 2013.
This really should be called Cake Part 2, but the alter ego of Rihanna (aka the woman behind most of her hits) finally gets the hit that she deserves. It really must have been frustrating to write all those hits and be unable to create that magic by herself. This should be big, it even features a return to form Missy verse. Benny Blanco and Stargate on the production as if you couldn’t tell.
We don’t know if it is uncouth to make yourselves unfuckwithable but this is surely the case. After last year’s amazing soca mix (for our HDD Houseparty Series which covered classics), this year’s mix is named after one of the biggest songs Differentology. It features all the tunes you should get to know before Soca Monarch and every Hipsters Dont Dance rave over the next year. Olatunji (aka Tunji Montana), K Rich, Patrice Roberts, Shurwayne Winchester are on the mix as well as the usual suspects. Put this on sneak some rum in your coffee and do a sly work skank.
One of our favourite sites on the internet is Kingston Style, we are fans of Jamaican fashion (the BTS of the new Major Lazer Video is our idea of heaven) and this ode to Snapbacks is perfect for us. Chi Ching ching might have the best style of any Jamaican artist right now (check out his facebook group). We do love Popcaan’s cardigan and snapback combo’s but it’s more a case of him looking like a baller grandad.
