On the 7th of July we are back at The Meter for our July Session. As we roll into the summer months we decided to get some of the best up and coming DJ’s in the UK to join us. DJ Darka and CanYouFelix are two of people that run the Manchester music scene. Between them they are involved in some of the best and brightest of the city’s vibrant clubbing scene. Both of them are resident DJ’s at one of the Top Five dancehall nights in the country (coincidentally so are we), Felix runs Kiss My Teeth, a great Tropical night in Manchester, which recently branched out into London at the World famous Camden Roundhouse. DJ Darka’a radio show is a must listen for those in the know and really highlights the best of the new and old Manchester clubbing scenes.
So we have those two guys joining us as well as Illanja giving us a classic garage set. The man knows his garage, this will not be purely a reminisce set, expect to hear gems that you may have missed out on. We all know that you associate garage with the summer, we grew up with it so lets go back and really HAVE IT. Kazabon and Hootie Who will of course bring you the best in hip hop, dancehall and tropical from around the world.
Last week Hootie Who was a guest on Style and Swagger and did a 30mins African Dancehall influenced set (You can hear that soon). Most of the music came from West Africa and in particular from lady Kaakie. She comes from Ghana and is rapidly gaining a higher profile thanks to a string of bangers mostly produced by JMJ. On the above performance she preforms To Much and Toffee Pon Toungue. Toffee might be familiar because it’s direct cousin is Overproof riddim (Mavado’s Settle Down, Beenie Man Let’s Go and Daniel Beddingfield’s Sometimes You Just Know) none the less she smacks it. I urge you to check out the studio version and hear how she rides that beat.
Every week the excellent So Shifty guys will bring you a performance that they deem #unf*ckwithable. You can give them suggestions on twitter just using that hashtag but ultimately they will decide. This week’s edition is from Killer Mike and his incredibly NSFW video for his single Big Beast. Imagine all the best bits from Drive but with a much better soundtrack. T.i is on top form on this track but for me Bun B takes it.
DJ CWD is back with his latest installment of his video series, what’s in it? Well the best in hip hop, uk hip hop, r and b and whatever else tickles his fancies. No one else is even doing something like this and this mixes are of such a quality that its worth it to watch the whole thing.
Check the tracklist after the fold. Continue reading →
Finally the video for Famous Eno and Mc Stitch’s All Good Fm has dropped. It’s wicked and shows what London pirate radio station life is. To be fair it’s a really good video that makes me feel really proud of living in London. Great job everyone. FYI Pellici’s is Bourdain (a major HDD food and culture inspiration) certified as well, so make sure you check that out when you get the chance.
