Do you remember when you had to wait for MTV’s The Lick or Yo MTV Raps to see the best new videos? We do! Kazabon even had a VHS of the her favourite videos, from a time when Hype Williams was behind nearly every great video and when artists tried to out-do themselves and their peers with the hottest new video. We have decided to dig into the HDD video vault to bring you some of our favourites.
My experience of music videos growing up is slightly different to Kazabon, I didn’t have Sky (cable tv for our non uk friends) and the only videos I (Hootie Who) saw were either on Top of The Pops or CD-UK. Both of those shows were live music shows so video were often fleeting. I started to watch videos on my laptop pre youtube which meant watching them on my school’s intranet. the video that i feel in love with was DMX’s Party Up. It’s funny to say think that the song is a) his biggest pop hit and b) it’s a video about a Bank robbery caused because his ATM card didn’t work. I like to think that this was an actual show real that DMX used to get acting jobs in those Jet-Li films including the classic Cradle to the Grave.
One of the contenders for LP of the year gets a visual for it’s grime infused track. the two members of TDE sure know how to have a good time. If you get the chance i highly recommend reading the TDE/ Black Hippy profile in The Fader and then the individual Ab- Soul Q and A to see how the group functions.
In other Drugged out Hip Hop news Juciy J dropped the video for Gotta A New One where he samples Tyler the Creator saying swag to such an effect that you don’t find it in the least annoying.
Murlo, who you can catch at HDD this Saturday, is coming out with a new 4 track EP on his own Wineyard records. If you didn’t catch the drift he loves vino based puns. The Ep features 4 tracks that we really love at HDD and are incredibly glad that he is releasing them. Next To You is one of our favourite jawns he has ever done and the rest are just as incredible. They will all be availble on his bandcamp page on the 10th of March.
You can also catch Murlo on HDD House party later this week doing an exclusive soca mix, trust me it’s not to be missed.
Every week the excellent So Shifty guys will bring you a performance that they deem #unf*ckwithable. You can give them suggestions on twitter just using that hashtag but ultimately they will decide. This week’s edition is a Naija vs Ghana collaboration R2Bees feat Wande Coal called Kiss Your Hand.
Speaking of Ghana So Shifty just dropped their Azonto mix named Watch Me Do My Azonto. You can also check out Fuse ODG doing the dance right here.
The man behind the second best dancehall album (IMO, Kingston story was the best) of last year is back with his latest visual and in fact remix of the OG. Flavour aka the king of high life is joined by one of Nigeria’s leading ladies Tiwa Savage on this sultry love song. One of the best things about naija pop is the humour in the lyrics, so god ahead and tell your loved one she is your “jellof rice oh”.
The video also resembles that ice part of Sean Paul Temperature video including the Willie Bounce dancing.
We have just released our first refix on our soundcloud. It combines legendary grime/bassline producer Dexplicit‘s Bulla Cake with Crush from Texan Mc Beat King to bring you Bulla Cake Crush. Both songs are long time favourites and we thought the idea of combining swag rap and classic grime was too good to miss out on.
Make sure you check out the other works of the OG artists by clicking on their names.
